Welcome to the new weekly feature, Beers of the Week! Each weekend we will be featuring craft beers we have recently discovered and think everyone would enjoy. The majority of these beers will be new releases, local craft creations, seasonal selections, or limited release specials. We welcome any feedback or suggestions as this weekly feature evolves. We are also open to suggestions of beers and breweries to try!
Our first Beer of the Week is Stone Brewing Company’s Enjoy by 02.14.17. A limited release Double IPA infused with chocolate and coffee that is guaranteed fresh for 37 days from bottling or until 02.14.17. Coming in at 9.4% ABV and 90 IBU’s this is a true Double IPA. Despite what many will think on first impression, coffee and chocolate…in an IPA?!?, this beer is a seasonal experiment gone very, very well. With a hoppy and slightly fruity aroma, the coffee and chocolate really develop in the subtle flavors found deep in the beer. The coffee and chocolate notes round out what would otherwise be a slightly sweet and fruity IPA to a rich and decadent experience. A perfect beer to share with someone special in the coming weeks or to simply reward yourself with after a hard day!
Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s Luponic Distortion No. 004 is their fourth iteration in the Revolving Hop Series which features unique and experimental hop combinations. This selection is created using four South African hops which exhibit strong notes of tropical fruits, white grapes, and peaches. An easy drinking IPA coming in at 5.9% and 59 IBU’s, this beer reminds of warmer weather and those sunny days by the pool. This beer is designed to be fresh for 90 days from canning/bottling, so pick one up while they’re still available.
The Stingray Imperial IPA from Coronado Brewing Company is a smooth, fruity Imperial that does not overpower with hops. Brewed in Coronado Beach, CA and composed with Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe, and Southern Cross hops, it is incredibly well balanced. The piney, citrusy aroma gives way to smooth notes of tropical fruits that seem appropriately reflected in the beer’s orangish, slightly cloudy appearance. Coming in at 7.9% ABV, the Stingray does not overpower for an Imperial IPA. Pick one up here in the colder months to remind yourself that warmer weather is right around the corner!
The final beer this week is Bison Brewing Company’s Organic Chocolate Stout. A perfect seasonal beer brewed in San Jose, CA with 5.0% ABV. This stout is lighter in color than many others with a medium brown and slightly translucent appearance. The chocolate notes are definitely present throughout the beer without adding any bitterness. Overall this is a great lighter stout option with minimal malt for the colder months, especially for those who prefer organically brewed beers.
